Quintin 1st vs Old Isleworthians
One thing we learnt about Saturday’s game was not to play two days after New Year’s Eve!!! Even though an early morning inspection had shown the pitch to be frozen, fortunately (or unfortunately, some may say) by it was soft and muddy to play. There were eighteen pencilled into play a day before, but come 1.30, fourteen willing volunteers and Shakes took to the field hoping that Isleworth would have similar flu/hangover problems. But alas, not only did they turn up with 15 fit and able men, but also front row subs and a large number of supporters.
The game started well for the Q’s with Rob leading the way with a massive hit on his opposite number. However, even though we were putting on the pressure and the set piece, Isleworth took the early lead with a try following some missed tackles. Unfortunately, this wouldn’t be the last time that weak tackling would cost us points. Throughout the half, the home time had opportunities to cut the deficit and it took a number of missed opportunities before Rob forced himself over.
Having turned around 17- 7 down, Q’s still had the belief that they could come back, and from the whistle it was clear that we were determined to fight back. Although a couple of penalty kicks went astray, we were still able score through some determination from Charles and quick passing along the line for Alex to dive over in the corner. With the scores even, both sides attempted to up their game. However, slowly the away team took a hold on the game and a penalty and three further tries led to a convincing win.
Once again, the home side had shown some periods of great play, but were unable to keep it going for long enough. It was a game that was in our grasp but ultimately melted away, like the frost on the surrounding pitch!
The side has some very important games coming up against Mill Hill, Hackney and Royston (all away). Our season will be defined on how we play in these games!!
Debut: Russ – playing out of position at fullback
Girl of the Match: Gareth – for getting engaged! Silly silly boy!!!
Honourable mentions: Nick – for being willing to drop everything and play, after getting a phone call at that morning. Fantastic commitment.
Honourable mentions: Shakes – performed outstanding in his role of 2nd row
Dishonourable mention: Rob – for getting his leg in the way of the opposition player and hurting himself
