We played 4 20 mins quarters- although this proved to be more like 30min quarters. It was great to see so many down. We had 17 second team players and 4 first team players out for a run. This included 7 new players. Really pleasing to start well with 4 unanswered tries. Although we lost concentration in the heat we still came through 59 to 17!
Tries: Akers (2), Lindsay (2), Ron w (2). Smith (1), 2 more I didn't catch - email to claim!
Con: may (2), smith (2)
Mom: pixie - outstanding front row performance. Girl: Akers - horrible hat trick avoidance (it really was bad)
It was a bright and early morning as the mighty Quintin were assembling to prepare for their final warm up before the start of the forthcoming season. There was one distinctive reoccurring problem appearing "the early kick off" seemed to be a stumbling block for a few. No names mentioned (Pixie and his "3 mates")
So in true Quintin II's style we found Belsize out warming up before us, and to great amazement Belsize Park III's had a squad of 26!!!! Who are they kidding. Anyway the time came to kick off and we manage to scramble 15 together. For the first quarter of the game both teams were evenly matched even though the scrums were uncontested as the squad of 26 consisted mainly of fast backs. Then Pixie turned up (with no mates), Mr Talentless went over to hook for them to enable contested scrums and the ageing ref disappeared for a long period, as the deadlock was broken with a few (too many) mistakes. Despite this the troops rallied well and even though we fell further behind before half time, the main thing was we remained positive in the glorious sunshine. By half time we'd received a few knocks and we made a few rolling subs.
Things got better as the game went on and credit should go to our pack who had the upper hand on their opponents and the patience and persistent pressure finally paid off as Dylan went over for our first try. Then the ref disappeared again with knock ons being missed but somehow he saw every time they crossed the try line. Due to their significant numbers we thought we'd give some of their boys a run around for the last quarter (had nothing to do with the fact we were down to 13 guys by now) and we continued to give our all. And we got the best possible finish scoring two consolation tries, to take us forward into the league next week. The first went to Fergus who barged over after we were camped on their try line for a number of phases and with the last play of the game we gave the ball to one of the guys we'd borrowed to make him feel better and let him score the try, even though any of 14 of our guys could have scored that try. It made him smile. Even though the score doesn't read nice the truth of the matter is there are plenty of positives and I'm certain QUINTIN II'S will not lose this heavily again.
Big thank you for everyone who turned up and made my job on the day easier.
