At least once this month the might of St George defeated the springboks, because having seen Ashton’s side only manage to scrape a win against a couple of red necks, I can’t see it happening again on Friday!
This was a big game and would set the tone for the rest of the season, Q’s came out of the blocks quickly, possibly helped by a rather casual Springboks side who eventually turned up and then proceeded to dither on the side of the pitch with seemingly no attempt to warm up.
The first score came with the run of play and saw Q’s take and early 7 – 0 lead though the Springboks were back on level teams with their first attack on the counter from a poor kick. The boot up field was really all the Springboks had as an attacking weapon with an excellent Q’s defence, which was up to the task all day long. On a narrow pitch we made sure that there was never any room, and after Q’s own angry south African pointed out politely but rightly following their second try that we were over committing at the breakdown, Q’s never looked troubled.
The teams turned round with Q’s ten points to the good. All to often in past seasons this would have been a cue to allow the opposition back in, instead the opposite happened with Q’s stepping up a gear and not allowing another score against them for the second half, with further points added from both the boot of Sanger and more tries from the backs it ended a very successful afternoon. Including Brad learning from his mistake last week to get himself on the score sheet.
Dykie was awarded man of the match for his tireless work even at his rather extended years with Ciaran the girl of the match, by being more breakable than the Chocolate prop. One can only assume that The Ginger League were involved in some sort of spread betting scandal.
As Q’s ran away with the game the springboks tried there normal brand of late tackles and cheap shots, credit must go to all the players for keeping their heads and doing the retaliation with rugby.
